A number of car owners fell victim to a tyre slasher in the Tahunanui School area last night with reports that AA road service attended to several vehicles in both Muritai and Rawhiti Street this morning.

Hannah McColloch and her four flatmates woke to find two cars, parked side by side, slashed outside their Rawhiti Street property by the Tahunanui School courts.

“My flatmate’s girlfriend went out to go home at about 10pm. She heard a tyre leaking air which belonged to my flatmate Yasmine Ohlson. She went back out and text me ‘Mine’s leaking too’. The marks where the knife has gone into the tyre are only an inch long,” Hannah says.

Hannah and her flatmates could not believe that somebody would do this to the vehicles.

“Who would do this? What joy do they get out of doing that to the tyres? They must have stood between the two cars and slashed both sides. I don’t get what people get out of doing this to other people, it’s just not nice.”

Hannah’s initial thoughts were that the attack felt like it may have been targeted due to a bad string of luck with another flatmate’s car a few weeks ago.

“Our other flatmate went out to Wakefield a few weeks ago. One week his side mirror was snapped off and the next week his window wiper had been snapped off. All three events have happened on Thursdays.”

She also believes that it may be part of a string of car attacks that have hit the Tahunanui area recently.

“Apparently all around the neighborhood there are issues with people breaking into cars and things at the moment. You see it posted all over Facebook pages.”

Hannah phoned the police who filed the complaint. Yasmine says she hopes they track down the culprit.

“We thought we better because there is obviously something going down and we didn’t know if it was us being personally targeted. I was sort of annoyed that there was nothing that could be done immediately. There’s not much you can do to stop it happening down the street, it’s not like we have surveilance or anything.”

She says she will have to wait to replace the tyre until she can afford a new one but for now will have to use the spare.

“It’s not something worth claiming under insurance as there is a $100 excess I would have to pay. I have a spare on there at the moment but it’s flat. The guy who lives out the front came and helped us. He’s an absolutely lovely man and he helped us change both car’s tyres.”
