More than 15,000 homes, schools and businesses in Nelson now have access to ultra fast broadband, says communications minister Amy Adams.

The latest results for phase one of the Ultra-Fast Broadband programme were released today and the minister says the build is now 56 per cent complete, with 15,014 Nelson homes, schools and businesses that are able to connect to the network.

“By 2019, 75 per cent of New Zealanders will have access to fibre under the first phase of our UFB programme. Nelson’s build is on track and we’re seeing good uptake across the region. Faster, more reliable broadband will bring significant social, educational and economic benefits to this community,” Ms Adams says.

The roll-out will be completed in 2018, she says.

“Across New Zealand uptake of UFB services has increased to 14.6 per cent and we’re nine per cent ahead of schedule. With the build completion on track, the Government is now focused on the extension of UFB to at least 80 per cent of New Zealanders,” Ms Adams says.

Residents can connect to the network by calling their broadband provider to check if the fibre is able to be connected and the best package for them.
