A new recycling centre was officially opened in Richmond yesterday as part of the Tasman District Council’s new waste management scheme.

The materials recovery facility (MRF) will receive recycling from 17 ,500 Tasman properties as part of the roll out of the new wheelie bin collections.

The 1000 metre square building has an approximate value of around $1.1 million along with three modern $500,000 recycling trucks.

The plant has 13 conveyor belts, eight of which are variable in speed, a paper and card baler, LED lighting and a visitor viewing platform.

It can process two tonnes of recycling per hour with four staff with the ability to process four tonnes per hour with additional staff and plant run time.

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the facility has been built with the ability to handle larger volumes of recycling in the future if the recycling scheme expands to more areas.
