Abel Tasman National Park has ranked number 35 in a list of “500 best places in the world” published by Lonely Planet.
The list, published today, is billed as “the 500 most thrilling, memorable and interesting places in the world – ranked in order of brilliance.”
Abel Tasman joins nine other New Zealand places including Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, 81; Lake Wanaka, 94; Stewart Island, 125; Bay of Islands, 130; Whakarewarewa, 276; Waitomo Caves, 280; and Te Papa, 285.
Fiordland National Park is New Zealand’s highest ranked place at number 17.
The Temples of Angkor in Cambodia took out the number one place. A complex made up of more than 1,000 temples, shrines and tombs.
Australia’s great barrier reef comes in second.
The list was compiled with information from The Lonely Planet’s guidebooks, first published in 1973.
