Throwback Thursday: Boer War Memorial

Erected after the 1899-1902 Boer war in Africa, the Boer War Memorial statue has stood in Queens gardens as a tribute to the fallen.

The memorial reads: “This monument is erected in memory of the troopers from this district who lost their lives during the Boer War in South Africa 1899-1902.”

Nelsonian men joined the many contingents of Mounted Rifles who were sent to uphold the British flag, fighting from 1899 to 1902, 13 of these men gave their lives and are listed on the monument.

Six thousand and five hundred New Zealand men fought in the war, Nelson provided a large contribution of these soldiers.

The memorial was funded through a penny subscription from Nelson school children. Many were present when the Bishop of Nelson Reverend Kepthorne unveiled the memorial.
