The future of Robbie’s Bar and Bistro in Richmond is uncertain says its franchisor, but he is hoping to find a new owner “at a bargain price” to continue running the business.
Two weeks ago the local owners of the Richmond business went into receivership and closed the restaurant for several days. But the doors are back open and Paul Kofoed, who owns the brand of all 12 Robbie’s throughout the South Island, says he is hoping for community support and a new owner.
“Basically it’s been really tough economic times, especially to trade a hospitality business at the moment. When we first looked at that business on that site almost four years ago Richmond was looking at a big subdivision and things were going to happen and take off. But it’s been a really flat economy and it’s been really tough.
“But we hope to sell the business, we’d love to get a new owner in there to take charge of the business and really get it going. I still believe it’s a good business on a good site, it just needs someone with some energy, passion and hospitality experience that can drive the business forward.”
Nelson man Geoff Falloon is the receiver.
Paul says the other Robbie’s restaurants have also been having a tough time but the rebuilding of Christchurch – where six of the restaurants are – has seen things pick up recently. He believes the same will happen for the Richmond branch. “From a group point of view, we still believe in the site and still believe in Richmond. We’d like to stay there.”
Paul told Nelson Weekly he is unsure how long the business will be able to continue to trade in receivership.By Andrew Board
