Wakefield were given a tough introduction to life in division one, sinking to a 6-1 home defeat against Nelson College on Saturday.

But despite the loss, manager Richard Malcom says the side is just happy to be competing in Nelson’s top competition for the first time in the club’s 30 year history. “I have to take my hat off to the guys at Nelson College, they were very well organised as a team,” he says. “It was a lot quicker than what we were used to but from our perspective, with a team that has only been training together for a couple of weeks, against a team with guys in the Nelson Falcons, they certainly deserved the result.”

Richard says the club’s goals for this season were to reach the top four in its first ever season in the Nelson Pine Industries division one competition, while also hoping to push into the second round of the ASB Chatham Cup – New Zealand’s longest running football tournament.

In other results, Richmond Athletic had a strong win on the weekend, beating the FC Nelson Colts side 3-0 at Jubilee Park and AMI Nelson Suburbs drew 2-2 with FC Nelson Sprig & Fern at Guppy Park.
