Garin College has defended the Nelson ASB Stage Challenge, with its performance ‘Monstrous’ winning the competition’s open division. The school won the competition last year, although in 2012 perennial favourites Nayland and Waimea College did not enter, making Monday night’s win that much more significant. The story behind Monstrous, which was performed by a smaller than usual cast, touches on a young couple partying and being exposed to drugs. The theme explored ‘you are not you when you’re on drugs’, taking the audience on a journey where the couple experience the pain and torture drugs bring. Design judge Jane Winter, who was on a three person panel, says the performance was dynamic. “I loved their concept and the high dramatic tension throughout their performance – a very smooth and polished performance,” she
says. Following the performance, representatives from the school told the crowd that a smaller cast meant higher quality costumes could be made. In a close second place was Nayland College with its performance ‘O Cisne Branco’, themed on a Brazilian carnivale while Waimea College finished in third place.
