A big crowd watched some tight racing in Brightwater over the weekend as some of the top local motocross riders went handlebar-to-handlebar at the Nelson Flat Track Champs.
Nelson rider Bryan Heaphy took out the Leith McConichie Memorial Trophy for top local rider home in the feature race at champs, while Marlborough’s Steve Lange took home the Keith Sinclair Cup.
Co-organiser Dan Shallcrass says it was a great two days of racing. “We had a really good turnout of spectators and plenty of new faces so we were really happy with that. The promotion in the Weekly worked really well.”
More than 100 riders competed at the event with Vinnie Thompson finishing second in the mini unclutched, Luke Heaphy finished second in mini clutched, Milan Healy-Furniss finishing second in junior 125 and Jackson Walker third in that race.
Jessie Puklowski won the clubman race with Ethan Helliwell finishing second. Bryan Heaphy won the MX2 race with Dylan Waghorn coming in second, with Ethan Bruce finished second in the MX1 race.
In the ladies race, Alicia McLaughlan came in first, followed by Skye Edwards and Deliama Puklowski. In the veterans 35-44 age group, Ashton Oliver finished third, with Dan Shallcrass second and Bryan Heaphy in first.
In the veterans 45 plus age group, Ross Troughton was second with Stu Karstens in third.
Dan says the event was a total success and wanted to thank the organisers and land owners for helping put it on.
