The trust behind a move to build a 14 kilometre pest-proof fence is within touching distance of reaching its fundraising target after the government chipped in $216,000 on Friday.
The Government’s $216,000 from the Community Conservation Partnership Fund will support the development of a 700-hectare pest-free wildlife Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.
On Saturday, the trust held a community celebration to mark the project’s progress, and environment minister Nick Smith says he’s delighted the government could help the project. “Once complete it will be nationally significant for conservation, as well as offering people opportunities for education, training and practical involvement in safeguarding the area’s natural heritage. The sanctuary will also deliver economic benefits to the region as a tourist attraction.”
The trust still needs some more money, but is hopeful construction can begin this Spring.
