A woman was carried out of the hills behind Richmond by search and rescue volunteers last night after she suffered a suspected broken ankle.

Police received a call about 8.30pm that the woman was injured on a walking track above Valhalla Drive in Richmond.

The rescue helicopter was unable to be used due to overhead power lines so a team of eight LandSAR volunteers, ambulance and police staff walked in to find the woman. She had been wrapped in a survival blanket but was in significant pain and becoming cold.

The team carried her out on a stretcher and she was taken to Nelson hospital by ambulance about 11pm with a suspected broken ankle.

Police would like to thank the LandSAR volunteers for their efforts last night.
