Nelson adventure racer Brent Edwards showed laser-accurate navigational skills in winning the Nelson Orienteering Club’s event in the Maitai Valley on Sunday by a massive 25 minutes.
Brent raced around the 24 controls in 56 minutes 21 seconds, making the challenging long orange course look like a walk in the park. Waimea College student Cameron Jones matched Brent’s speed but not his map reading skills to finish second in 1hr 21min 25sec, with Imogene Scott third in 1hr 23min 28sec. The course proved too much for many of the 48 competitors with 24 DNFs.
Jane and Ben Alloway won the short orange event, Angela Mangnall won the yellow while Paulina Harrison won the white course events.
The club’s next event is the first race of the Winter Night Rogaine series, starting at Tahunanui on Wednesday June 3. Races will also be held at Waimea College on June 10, Stoke on June 17 and the Grampians on June 24.
Registration for all races in the series is from 5.30pm. Entry is $5 and competitors need to bring a good torch and reflective clothing.
