There were as many red faces as there were yellow hi-viz vests on a construction site on Nayland Rd on Tuesday after an excavator hit a water main sending a jet of water towering into the air.

The Nayland Rd geyser was snapped by well-known Nelson photographer Grant Stirling who says “there were plenty of anxious looks and discussions” from the contractors working on the site. He says the geyser erupted at about 9am and was “about the height of a lamp post”.

“I was going to a job and saw it as I went past,” Grant says. “It was still going when I went back so I took a photo on my phone – there was some serious pressure there.”
