Councillors will discuss concept plans for the proposed Stoke Community Centre for the first time tomorrow.
The plans were unveiled to members of the Stoke Seniors today as part of the Nelson City Council’s community engagement for the project and councillors on the Community Services Committee will consider them at the council chambers on Thursday.
$5.6 million has been set aside in 2015/16 and 2016/17 to build the facility.
Deputy mayor Paul Matheson says Stoke will house three quarters of our population growth and half of our new housing over the next thirty years and the council is focused on developing our fastest growing suburb.
“We have recognised the need for appropriate facilities and services to support this rapid growth, and this community facility at Greenmeadows is an important step in supporting an important area of our city,” he says.
The new venue, which will provide both community and sporting facilities, has been designed by Jerram Tocker and Barron.
“There are still options to be decided upon, including whether or not a cafe is included in the final design so it’s important to continue to listen to our community, this meeting is one of the ways we are continuing this engagement,” says Paul.
Additional projects which have been included in the Long Term Plan include further discussions with the community on the future of Stoke Hall and how it can best fit with the new Greenmeadows facility; consultation, planning and physical works for a youth park; an extension to the Library and further improvements to parking and transport issues.
