The opening of the Blessing of the Fleet was marked with flares and fireworks tonight as part of the annual celebration.
Crowds pooled around the Seafarers Memorial at the Sunderland Memorial Pier and around rocks road to gaze at the loud sparkling sky.
Zoe Ballinger, 5, says she enjoyed watching the fireworks but they were very noisy and she had to cover her ears.
The rest of the Blessing of the Fleet service celebrations have been postponed until Sunday at 12.30pm.
