Nelson College has won the prestigious Quadrangular Tournament in Wellington today.
The school’s 1st XV beat Wellington College 6-3 in the final in the capital this afternoon. Halfback Matt Soper kicked two first half penalties to give the visitors a 6-3 lead at half time before “huge defence” in the second half lead to the championship.
Community relations manager for the team, Mark Vinsen, says it’s a big win.
“It’s a massive result and good for this group of lads because it’s been a hard year.”
Nelson hosted last year’s tournament but lost the final to Wellington 5-0.
Earlier in the tournament, Nelson beat Wanganui Collegiate 30-7. Nelson College last won the tournament outright in 2001 but were joint winners in 2012 with Wellington after a 31-all draw.
