Nelson College was originally established on Trafalgar St in 1856 and was home to eight students. The school moved again to Manuka St and then finally to its current site on Waimea Rd in 1861.

On December 7 1904 a fire started within the school almost completely destroying the building. In the 1929 earthquake two students were injured and the building was once again severely damaged.
