Kids with developmental delays and disabilities were munching on cupcakes and covered with balloons yesterday.

Little Stars, a free playgroup for children from zero to six years old with developmental delays or disabilities hosted an open day in which they invited the public and health workers to join in on the fun.

Little Stars mum, Sarah McLarin says groups like the Nelson Hospital child development team came.

“We had a lot of different organisations come, so there were a lot of adults joining in with the kids songs which was quite funny and the kids always enjoy it when the adults are a bit silly and join in.”

Sarah says her four-year-old daughter Emily has Prader-Willi syndrome and has been going to the playgroup since she was six months old.

“Emily loves it, she loves the familiarity and it’s just as good for me as it is for her.”

Based out of the St Barnabus church creche, the playgroup is every Wednesday during term time from 9.30 am until noon.

Coordinator, Nicki Berkett says the playgroup caters for the needs of each child.

“We support the children in any way we can, whether it’s signing, teaching or anything, everything is bigger, brighter and adapted.”

“We’ve got kids with everything from minor to rare conditions, one of our kids is the only one in New Zealand with their condition.”
