Two new gateway signs were erected on the outskirts of Richmond’s CBD last week with another three likely to be installed on Lower Queen St, Main Rd Hope and Salisbury Rd.
The signs have been commissioned by Richmond Unlimited which has been driving the project in conjunction with the Tasman District Council and New Zealand Transport Agency. They were installed on Gladstone Rd and the Richmond Deviation initially designed by Nelson graphic design company HotHouse about two years ago and after “a huge process” are ready to go.
Richmond Unlimited’s Toni Lane says the signs are long overdue because the existing welcome signs are well past their use by date. The new signs are aimed at putting Richmond on the map and attracting travellers into the town – the project has been funded by Richmond Unlimited, the TDC and NZTA .
“People don’t know where Richmond is,” Toni says. “The tourists drive straight on past so we need something to bring them into the town.”
Toni says the signs were designed to make sure they were consistent with the general look of Richmond.
“We have some exciting things happening in Richmond with the Queen St upgrade and these new signs will help kick that off. We have been working with the council so that the look is consistent throughout Richmond.”
