Hundreds of poi spinners and a whole lot of community spirit will help put the Nelson suburb of Victory on the map next month.
The Victory Community Centre is preparing for an official world record attempt at the largest poi spinning group on April 13 at Victory Square, and are confident they can get more than the 250 people needed to set the new record.
But, they need the help of the community to make it happen. Nicola Bare, programme and facilities manager at the centre, says the idea came about when they were discussing how they could get some more exposure for the centre, and setting a world record attempt for poi spinning seemed like a perfect fit.
“We want everyone to know who we are, where we are and we want it to be a community event,” she says.
The centre have officially registered the event with Guinness World Records, and are now looking for volunteers to help make an estimated 500 poi over the next month, which they will be selling on the day for $2 if people don’t have their own.
Nicola says that in the coming weeks they will also be holding poi-making workshops at Victory Primary School, who are backing the event. Anyone is welcome to come along to the workshops and donations of plastic shopping bags and foam mattresses for the poi stuffing would be welcomed.
The record attempt will be held on Wednesday April 13 at Victory Square. Check in from 3:30pm with the record attempt at 5pm. Free entry (Koha appreciated), corporate teams of up to 10 people are $90.
To register, donate or volunteer for the event, you can email vccevents@victory.school.nz or phone 546 8389. Registrations close 3pm, Friday April 1.
