Waimea College multisport athlete Cameron Jones has started his race season with a commanding win over a small field in the Shoe Clinic Mountainbike Duathlon Series at Rabbit Island.
The 15-year-old who is looking to culminate his efforts with a two-day individual Coast to Coast race next year says he was surprised with how well his legs stood up to the run.
The event started with a 6km run then 18km bike ride and a final 3km run to the finish.
“I hadn’t done much running training until the past few weeks so I’m surprised at how well I did, particularly on the first bit.
“The competition wasn’t as strong as it was last year so I just kept pushing myself and make sure I was hurting all the time.”
Cameron did a kayak leg of the Coast to Coast earlier this year.
Cameron says he has events like this lined up for the next few weeks with the addition of some kayaking. He will compete in the Hutt City Crazyman event this weekend.
Cameron says he was drawn to the sport because of its individual nature. “The harder you train, the faster you go.”
The next race in the Nelson series is on May 8.
