Primary and intermediate students from across the region gave tennis a try at Saturday’s Have a Go Tennis Open Day.
Eleven clubs opened up their courts for 40 of the region’s schools and the students had a ball.
“It’s really awesome and heaps of fun,” says Nayland Primary School student Lily Keeler Herd. “I usually just watch my sister who plays, but now I’m keen to play too.”
Students learnt racket skills, footwork, forehand hits, backhand hits and rallying.
Tahunanui Tennis Club Coach Suzanne Spencer says that, with over 70 kids coming to their courts, the day was beyond her expectations.
“I was just talking to the kids from Nayland Primary and they were all saying, ‘I want to start tennis, I want to start tennis’ so we’ve definitely got them excited and keen to play.”
