It proved to be a busy week around the country and in Nelson, as Winter Tournament Week was in full swing.

Nelson hosted the South Island Secondary Schools’ netball tournament and the men’s and women’s Under-19 golf tournaments at Nelson and Greenacres Golf Club’s respectively.
Further afield, the Nelson College Under-15A rugby team won their South Island tournament for the first time since 2010.
Their Senior A basketball team basketball team finished fifth in the South Island, qualifying them for nationals.
The Nelson College senior underwater hockey team finished second in New Zealand after losing the final in overtime to Auckland’s Mt Albert Grammar, in Wellington.
The junior team finished fourth. The Nelson College golf team was third in New Zealand.
The defending champion Nelson College First XI finished 12th at the National Secondary School Championships in Papamoa, but had a good 5-0 win over Mt Albert Grammar.
The junior basketball team finished 12th in New Zealand at their tournament in Dunedin, while cyclist Finn Fisher-Black was victorious at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships in Blenheim.
The Nelson College senior hockey team placed 10th in New Zealand, in Carterton.
The Waimea Senior A basketball team won their South Island tournament and qualified for nationals in three weeks.
The First XI girl’s hockey team won the Audrey Timlin Cup tournament.
The First XI boys football team also won the New Zealand Secondary Schools football crown and retained the Alex Harvey Industries Challenge Series trophy which will mean Nelson and Marlborough teams will compete for it again next year. They beat St Peters in the final 2-1.
David Zohrab proved he was a name for the future as the 15-year-old Nelson golfer finished tied for sixth at the National Under-19 Golf Championships at the Nelson Golf Club.
David was the best placed local after a one under par round of 70 left him at one under for the 54-hole tournament, seven shots behind winner Daniel Hillier from Manor Park. Daniel shot a five under par 66 to take the title by two shots.
Greenacres golfer Andrew Drummond finished tied for 21st at 6 over. Other Nelson golfer placings; Connor Winter T44th, Matthew Grimes T44th, Kameran Clarke 50th. In the Women’s Under-19 golf tournament at Greenacres Golf Club; Nelson’s Eve Clarke finished 26th and Lizzie Neale 29th in the 36-strong field.
Nelson College for Girls finished 13th in the A grade at the South Island Secondary Schools’ netball tournament at Saxton Stadium, which finished this afternoon.
Waimea College finished 22nd in the same grade. After beating Lincoln High School 35-33 to start their day, they lost 34-22 to St Peter’s College in the playoff for 21st.
In the B grade, Nayland College and Garin College found themselves playing each other for 17th place, with Garin winning the contest 31-28.
Golden Bay High School won the C grade final with a 39-25 win over Picton’s Queen Charlotte College, on the outdoor courts at Saxton Fields.
