Sarah Walker may be the pin-up girl in the BMX world but Nelson’s Sally Davies is hoping to be the next big thing and this month’s world champs is the place she wants to start. Sally, 22, has made the New Zealand BMX team for the world champs which are in Auckland later this month. She is aiming for a top 16 finish and says she'd like to travel the world racing BMX. The former Nelson College for Girls student returned from the national championships at Easter with a fifth placing in the cruiser category and 11th in her favoured 20 inch class, a result that she labelled “disappointing”. “BMX is one of those sports where you can be top and then you fall off and that’s that. I didn’t fall off, I just had a crap semi-final and couldn’t get back.” Sally says she started racing BMX after watching it at the Nelson track when she was 14. She decided she liked the look of the sport and hasn’t looked back. “I loved it straight away, the speed and skill aspect is what I love, and beating the boys.” Sally is the only woman from Nelson in the New Zealand squad but there are five other riders going to the world champs from Nelson, they are Glen Ogle, Logan Clarke, Tasman Wakelin, Nash Thornley and Brady Taylor-Jones. She says she’s excited but nervous about the event which she describes as the biggest competition in her career and has been training as much as possible ahead of it. “The Nelson track isn’t very good, it’s not like any other track that you’ll compete at a high level on, it’s pretty much unusable during winter. So I have to travel to Christchurch every few weeks to use their track, which gets a bit costly.” Sponsors come to the party somewhat and Sally says she’s hoping to repay them and supporters with a strong showing at the world champs. “I’m lucky with my sponsors, the Sign Shop, Stoke Cycles, Endura, Maxxis and my football team, Nelson Suburbs, have all been really supportive so I can’t wait to get up there and do my best.”
