Do you know Nelson’s best sportsperson?

Nominations have opened today for this year’s Nelson Sports Awards, with clubs and individuals urged to start thinking whose names should go forward.

Last year almost 80 athletes, coaches and administrators were in the running for the nine categories at the annual awards which culminated in rower Zoe McBride winning the coveted Sportperson of the Year title.

Nominations will be announced on November 25 at the Annesbrooke Church in Stoke.

Organised by Sport Tasman, the awards – which have been running since 1959 and recognise outstanding performances and service by people in the Nelson region – are a highlight of the sporting calendar.

Sport Tasman events manager Rita Merriman says they will follow a similar format from last year with the qualifying period for performances by nominees being October 12, 2015 to October 9 this year.

She says the awards evening will again feature a high profile guest speaker, to be announced later this month, a three-course meal and evening entertainment.

“Get ready for a great evening celebrating the successes of our region’s athletes, coaches and lifetime contributors to sport.”

Rita wants sporting organisations and individuals to cast their net far and wide and get their nominations – which close on October 12 – in early to give the judges plenty of tough choices.

In the past 10 years the sportsperson of the year has been shared among three lawn bowlers, two rugby players, a rower, a cyclist, an adventure racing team, a multisport athlete and a mountain biker.
